Your opportunity 


Dillon’s Planning & Design group is looking for a Planner to join our multidisciplinary team of professionals. You will have the opportunity to work on new and exciting projects while providing clients with a fully integrated and superior customer experience. 


At Dillon, we operate as one team. This position is available within our Yellowknife or Calgary office locations. The expectation is that you will be primarily responsible for supporting the Yellowknife office, and are willing to travel to this office on a regular basis.

What your day will look like


Planning & Design (97%)

  1. Manage and coordinate various current and long term planning projects
  2. Prepare and contribute to planning documents and reports including community engagement summaries, background reports, analytical and rationale reports, and policies and plans
  3. Conduct and contribute to detailed research, including jurisdictional and legislative framework reviews
  4. Lead and support meetings, and facilitate engagement sessions with clients, stakeholders and community members
  5. Provide professional planning consulting services to municipal clients and the land development industry, including client advice, grant applications, project planning and design, as well as regulatory approvals
  6. Manage and/or support colleagues with various projects including municipal and risk management work
  7. Contribute to business development and coordination of client relationships and business growth in Western Canada including client interactions, networking, proposal preparation, and presentations
  8. Liaise with provincial and municipal government agencies, private developers, special interest groups, organizations and institutions
  9. Commit to the career development of staff, including technical direction, training recommendations, advising, coaching, and mentoring
  10. Contribute to Dillon’s corporate profile through active participation in professional associations and committees and periodic participation and presentations at industry/professional conferences
  11. Ability to travel to other business locations, remote communities, and Dillon offices for the purposes of executing your responsibilities, internal/external client relationship development, opportunity/project research, acquisition and project delivery
  12. Perform professional work related to a variety of assignments and other duties as assigned

What you will need to succeed

  1. A degree in Planning that is recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and a minimum of 5-7 years of relevant planning experience; OR
  2. A degree in a planning related discipline, plus a minimum of 8-10 years of relevant planning experience.
  3. Comprehensive understanding of municipal, provincial and federal policy, legislation, permitting and approvals processes for municipal and land development projects
  4. Proven excellence in problem solving and implementation; capability of providing strategic land use and development advice, managing municipal approval processes and coordinating multidisciplinary teams
  5. A strong work ethic, ability to allocate time effectively, work under pressure and manage tight deadlines
  6. Excellent communication and presentation skills; demonstrate an ability to effectively communicate and present results to a diverse range of audiences
  7. Ability to build and maintain strong business relationships
  8. A valid driver’s license is required
  9. Member or eligibility for membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP)


  1. Experience with complex land development applications (e.g., rezoning, outline plan/conceptual scheme, mixed-use, commercial and industrial permits) is an asset
  2. Existing land development client relationships is an asset
  3. Experience conducting or facilitating public consultation programs is an asset
  4. Experience with land use compatibility issues and risk management is an asset
