Dillon’s Communities and Environment technical group is looking for an interim Construction Observer in Manitoba, working on remote, isolated sites, to join our multidisciplinary team of professionals. You will have the opportunity to work on new and exciting projects building critical waste management infrastructure.  This contract will go from approximately June until October (depending on construction requirements).

Responsibilities

What your day will look like

This position is to observe and document that the interests of the client are being protected and that the project design is being constructed in accordance with the engineering drawings and specifications during the execution of the construction contract.

 

Project Coordination and Field Inspection

  • On-site construction observation and field inspections of waste management infrastructure projects, documenting that the projects meet the requirements of the contract drawings and specifications
  • Liaise with the Contractor and Dillon’s Project Manager daily (and other stakeholders as required) with respect to construction progress
  • Coordinate, monitor and witness required testing activities to document that Contractor testing is being carried out at the prescribed frequency and that the results are acceptable in accordance with the project drawings and specifications
  • Witness acceptance testing, compliance testing, and material testing
  • Complete field measurements
  • Manage daily records of site conditions, site activities, quantities and work progress through site photographs and daily site reports
  • Lead or support construction administration services as required, including the preparation of site instructions (SIs), contemplated change notices (CCNs), change orders (COs), and other contract documentation and record keeping, review and track project schedule and progress, attend health and safety meetings and project progress meetings
  • Review Contractor submitted progress claims and assist in the preparation of project Payment Certificates and quantity take-offs
  • Conduct a Substantial Completion review of the work upon completion with the Contractor, including the preparation of a list of deficiencies and outstanding items
  • Conduct a Final Completion review of the work upon completion with the Contractor, following correction of identified issues
  • Ability to travel to remote sites

Qualifications

What you will need to succeed

  • A degree in Civil Engineering of a diploma in Civil Engineering Technology would be an asset
  • Licensed to practice as a Certified Engineering Technologist or registered as an Engineer-in-Training, or eligible to be licensed/registered within six months
  • A minimum of five years' related work experience
  • Able to keep detailed organized notes/photos related to daily site activities, Contractor equipment used, site conditions and progress

Experience

  • Experience as a resident inspector / construction observer on large infrastructure and/or building projects
  • Working knowledge of relevant provincial standards and regulatory requirements
  • In depth knowledge of contract administration and construction observation services and requirements
  • Experience working in northern and/or remote communities
  • Exceptional communication (verbal and written) skills and attention to detail are essential
