Overview

Dillon’s Contaminant Assessment & Management discipline is looking for a Junior Environmental Technologist/Technician to fill an existing vacancy within our multidisciplinary team of professionals. You will have the opportunity to work on new and exciting projects while providing clients with a fully integrated and superior customer experience.

One position is available at one of our offices in the Greater Toronto Area (Hamilton, Oakville, Vaughan, North York or downtown Toronto) and one position is available in London.  We offer a competitive compensation package and flexible work hours to help support the competing demands of work and personal life.

Responsibilities

What your day will look like

Field Activities, Data Analysis and Reporting 

  • Receive focussed training using Dillon’s digital training tools and mentorship from experienced colleagues.
  • Liaise with a variety of Project Managers and other colleagues to schedule and plan upcoming work.
  • Conduct assignments such as field programs to support environmental site assessments (ESAs), remediation programs, spill response, hydrogeological assessments, and monitoring programs.  Tasks may include drilling supervision, monitoring well installation, development and sampling, soil classification and sampling, test pit excavation, surface water and sediment sampling, soil vapour and indoor air monitoring, methane monitoring and aquifer testing.
  • Develop and implement health and safety plans and lead site safety meetings to mitigate risks to yourself, other site staff, and the public. 
  • Identify and report hazards, near-misses and incidents supporting Dillon’s culture of safety.
  • Maintain detailed field notes on daily activities such as the collection and handling of environmental samples, site sketches, GPS data and photographs.  Provide input on data collection tools to support Dillon’s ongoing digital evolution.
  • Communicate and coordinate with clients, laboratories, government agencies and subcontractors such as utility locators, drillers, excavation contractors and remediation contractors.
  • Work alongside, oversee and direct the work of subcontractors including utility locators, surveyors, drilling contractors, excavators and remediation specialists.
  • Carry out office assignments under the direction of senior staff including data compilation and analysis, such as preparing data tables, borehole and test pit logs, and spreadsheet calculations, and assisting with the preparation of technical reports.
  • Assist project managers and other team members, including engineers, environmental scientists, planners, biologists and others on a variety of multidisciplinary projects.
  • Travel to a variety of off-site work locations including air travel, boat travel and vehicle travel to job sites throughout Ontario, and other provinces on an as needed basis.

Qualifications

What you will need to succeed

  • A technical diploma in environmental sciences, technology, engineering or a related environmental field an asset.
  • Entry level to 2 years of experience in environmental consulting, with a preference for candidates with fieldwork experience.
  • Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding field work in diverse environmental settings, such as remote or isolated locations, working alone, and year-round in various weather conditions, within safe and reasonable limits.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and commit to extended work assignments throughout Ontario, and in some instances, other provinces/territories. Travel can be more than 50% of the time during busy periods.
  • A commitment to supporting Dillon’s culture of safety.
  • Strong organizational, communication and note-taking skills (i.e., proper documentation of field activities, field observations and/or field results).
  • A positive attitude, desire for continued learning, strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to follow technical guidance and established policies and protocols (i.e., standard operating procedures for environmental sample collection).
  • Ability to work overtime when required.
  • Ability to wear site-specific personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hat, steel toed boots, fire retardant clothing, respirator and others as needed.
  • A valid Class G Driver’s License and a reliable vehicle for travel to job sites is required.
  • As the position involves field work, the candidate must be able to lift up to 40 lbs

Experience

  • Groundwater, surface water, soil and air sampling.
  • Operating, calibrating and maintaining field monitoring equipment, such as water quality meters and gas meters.
  • Working around heavy equipment such as excavators and drill rigs.
  • Working with hand and light power tools.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of products, specifically Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Knowledge of relevant provincial, and federal environmental legislation and policies will be an asset.

 

Compensation

$40,800 - $65,000

Dillon is including the salary range that we in good faith believe may offer for this position. It will be dependent on the successful applicant’s education, experience, and skills, in addition to internal equity and geographic region. Dillon reserves the right to pay outside of the posted range, contingent on factors unrelated to an applicant’s gender or other status protected by provincial and/or federal law.
